چکیده

DANTZLER, WILLIAM H. Renal response of chickens to infusion of hyperosmotic sodbm chloride solution. Am. J. Physiol. 2 I o(3) : 64o646. x966.-The renal response of chickens to a continuous infusion of 6% NaCl was studied. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) decreased following infusion of 20 mEq NaCl/kg and continued to fall with continued NaCl infusion while the plasma osmolality and sodium concentration rose, Urine flow increased initially and did not fall below control levels until about 40 mEq NaCl/kg had been given. Urine osmolality increased, but the urine did not: become hyperosmotic. Tubular maxima for secretion of para-aminohippurate (Tm& and reabsorption of glucose (Trr& decreased with GFR, suggesting that changes in GFR result from changes in the number of functioning nephrons. Infusion of PAH through the renal portal system did not change the relationship between TrnpYiH and GFR. TmpaH decreased more than TmG with small decreases in GFR. Possible explanations for this difference are discussed. In the absence of ability to excrete excess salt, chickens respond to a salt load with a decrease in the number of functioning nephrons, conserving water and tending to reduce plasma osmolality at the expense of excreting waste.

Cooperative role of ETA and ETB receptors in mediating the diuretic response to intramedullary hyperosmotic NaCl infusion.

Acute intramedullary infusion of hyperosmotic NaCl, used to simulate a high-salt diet-induced increase of medullary osmolality, increases urine production and endothelin release from the kidney. To determine whether endothelin mediates this diuretic and natriuretic response, urine flow and Na(+) excretion rate were measured during acute intramedullary infusion of hyperosmotic NaCl in anesthetiz...

Reduced carotid baroreceptor distensibility-induced baroreflex resetting contributes to impairment of sodium regulation in rats fed a high-fat diet.

Decreased carotid arterial compliance has been reported in obese subjects and animals. Carotid baroreceptors are located at the bifurcation of the common carotid artery, and respond to distension of the arterial wall, suggesting that higher pressure is required to obtain the same distension in obese subjects and animals. A hyperosmotic NaCl solution induces circulatory volume expansion and arte...

Effect of hyperosmotic solutions on salt excretion and thirst in rats.

We investigated urinary changes and thirst induced by infusion of hyperosmotic solutions in freely moving rats. Intracarotid infusions of 0.3 M NaCl (4 ml/20 min, split between both internal carotid arteries) caused a larger increase in excretion of Na(+) and K(+) than intravenous infusions, indicating that cephalic sensors were involved in the response to intracarotid infusions. Intravenous an...

Acute increases of renal medullary osmolality stimulate endothelin release from the kidney.

Experiments conducted in vitro suggest that high osmolality stimulates endothelin production and release by renal tubular epithelial cells. Whether hyperosmotic solutions exert similar effects in vivo is unknown. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that increasing renal medullary osmolality enhances urinary excretion of endothelin in anesthetized rats. Isosmotic NaCl (284 mosmol/kgH(2)O) was in...
